The focus of the class is the human figure and how to draw or paint from life. Through this observation-based approach, we will examine long-held artistic principles of light and human form and how to best apply these principles while working from the life model.

There are many principles concerning light and human structure. They are very easy to learn and may be learned in any order as long as they are apprehended and applied. They will strengthen any artist's work and deepen one's understanding of art and nature.

The class is flexible enough to accommodate students of any level. Students may join at any time, work at their own pace, and study either drawing or painting.

The course is organized so that the first few lessons are based on a set of exercises that illustrate particular principles regarding proportion and getting the correct shapes. The student will work from the life model with short poses. Each additional exercise builds on the previous exercise.

The intent is to have students draw or paint from the long pose as soon as possible. During the long pose students will explore human structure and anatomy, study portraiture, and learn how to create the illusion of form with pencil, charcoal, or oil paint. The long pose provides students the opportunity to work toward finishing a drawing or painting.

Individual critiques take place at each student's easel. During critiques, the instructor, Dennis Cheaney, will often draw/paint in order to best assist the student. At each stage a student will become aware as to what is the next step of his/her artistic development. The goal is to develop students so that they may eventually be on their own as fully trained artists.

Recommended reading consists of Drawing with an Open Mind and Light for the Artist both by Ted Seth Jacobs and The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing by Anthony Ryder.

Cost: $100 per four 3-hour classes.
